USD 261 Emphasizes Vocabulary to Strengthen Student Learning

Haysville Public Schools (USD 261) is placing a stronger emphasis on vocabulary instruction across the district to help students better understand what they read and learn in class.

Why vocabulary matters

Vocabulary knowledge is a key factor in reading comprehension. When students understand the words in a text, they are better able to understand the meaning of what they are reading.

Vocabulary is also emphasized throughout the Kansas academic standards, which include important terms students must understand to access grade-level content across subjects.

A research-based approach

USD 261 teachers are using research from education expert Robert Marzano, who developed a six-step process for effective vocabulary instruction.

During the first semester, teachers focused on implementing the first three steps of Marzano’s process as they built routines around vocabulary instruction. In the second semester, teachers will implement all six steps each week to deepen student understanding of new words.

Collaboration across classrooms

Teachers worked together in grade-level and subject-area teams to select key vocabulary words students should learn.

Each class focuses on one to two words per week, helping students steadily build vocabulary across subjects. Research suggests students benefit from learning about eight to ten new words each week.

The district has supported this effort through districtwide training sessions and ongoing guidance from instructional coaches during Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings.

Supporting vocabulary at home

Families can help reinforce vocabulary learning in simple ways:

  • Talk with your child often. Everyday conversations help introduce new words and strengthen language skills.

  • Provide real-life experiences. Activities such as cooking, fishing, or visiting new places naturally introduce new vocabulary.

  • Encourage wide reading. Reading books on different topics exposes students to new words and ideas.

Through this districtwide focus on vocabulary, USD 261 aims to strengthen reading comprehension and help students build the language skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.
